As a self-proclaimed skincare junkie, I’ve always been proud of my even-toned, relatively smooth skin. I try to religiously apply SPF, especially during the summer months when my skin is particularly quick to burn. Recently, I went tubing with some friends down a river and neglected to reapply sunscreen during the 4+ hour float. While I’ve gotten sunburns before, I was surprised to find (when I looked in the mirror several days after the trip) an actual, noticeable SUNSPOT had appeared on my face! I immediately started to panic, but then my years of obsessively reading about skincare began to take effect. Ahead, I’ve detailed out my plan for sunspot elimination, for those of you who are also trying to reverse a few unprotected days in the sun.
Step 1: I vow to use antioxidants
Antioxidants like vitamin C and E have been proven to brighten skin tone and hyperpigmentation. I’m working those ingredients into my routine starting now. I use the HydroPeptide Firma-Bright 20% Vitamin C Booster in combination with my serum at night (I use Soothing Serum because I have redness prone skin) and I mix a couple drops of Moisture Reset into my moisturizer to boost the vitamin E factor.
Step 2: I promise to exfoliate more
I used to exfoliate around once a week, but I’ve been upping my game with different chemical exfoliants, because I read that certain acids (lactic, glycolic, hydroxy) are great at helping cell turnover and reducing the appearance of sunspots. My favorite exfoliator is the Polish & Plump Peel because it combines Vitamin C crystals with a 5% Lactic Acid peel for immediate and long-term brightening benefits.
Step 3: I swear to remain consistent
As with any skincare concern, nothing will improve without consistency. Since I never went through a serious acne phase, I’ve never had to be super consistent with my skincare. Now that I’ve done the research and created a plan, the best and only way I can see results is by doing my skincare routine morning and night.
Step 4: I will NEVER FORGET to Use SPF
I mean, this one’s obvious, no matter what happens, I plan on doubling my efforts to use SPF daily. I promised myself I will reapply every 2 hours I’m in the sun, come hell or (literally) high water. I ADORE all the HydroPeptide sunscreens because they all include aloe vera, which not only soothes burns, it’s also been found to lighten hyperpigmentation and sunspots.
